Re: Apartment Life
Sat, August 30, 2008 - 7:11 AMI just got my copy last night! So here's some first impressions:
At first I couldn't figure out where the apartments were in my custom neighborhood, but I finally found apartment buildings that I could place in build mode under "special lots". The only things you can change in an apartment through build mode is flooring, paint/wallpaper etc, and gardening....and now you can change the ceiling tiles the same way you can change floors. Walls, windows and doors cannot be moved or changed. Also available now are built in closets...just build a small 2x1 room and place a closet...your Sims can woo hoo in it as well!
Good news! new furniture that is nice looking and actually high in comfort and room appeal! I've gotten so tired of all the new stuff being so low in comfort...it's nice to have some new, higher end stuff. Plus a love bed that has a vibration mode.
New interactions among the Sims...there is a variety of new gestures you can use with your Sims from a high-five to a kissy-kiss greeting. Sims can also tell stories now to other Sims.
You can learn new things from bookshelves...now, not only can you learn the basics, and parenting, but they can also learn things such as physiology, lifetime happiness as well as a few other topics that my fuzzy-brained, morning coffee deprived mind can't remember right now. I had one sim learn physiology, then went on to start studying lifetime happiness, but then these graphics started sproinging from the wall he shared with his neighbor. Since it was 3am and my Sim was still playing his stereo, I thought that maybe the neighbor was baning on his wall, so my Sim shut off the stereo and went to bed, but the "noise" kept happening, so it turns out that it was the neighbor who was being noisy at 3am, so my Sim went over and banged on the wall and the "noise" graphics went away for a while, but then soon started up again. I think he's going to have trouble with this neighbor.
Any apartments not occupied by your own sims will be filled with NPC's, but these NPC's will instantly move out if you want to move another Sim in. You can also get a roommate. They are an NPC who will live with you and you have no control over them unless you decide to build a relationship with them and either move them in (so to speak) or marry them, then they become a controllable Sim.
I haven't seen a witch yet, but yes, if you befriend a witch, they will teach you magic! I can't wait!
All in all, my first impression of the game is good and I look forward to discovering much more this weekend! -

Sat, August 30, 2008 - 4:15 PMI just got my copy today, but I haven't had much time to more than give it a cursory glance. It does look pretty awesome though. I can't wait for one of my sims to meet a witch and become one. I really want to try out the flying on a broomstick thing. :-) -

Tue, September 2, 2008 - 6:23 AMI haven't seen a single witch yet :( -

Re: Apartment Life
Tue, September 2, 2008 - 8:05 AMI haven't either. In fact, I'm also still waiting to see a werewolf. Maybe if I played more often...... :-) -

Re: Apartment Life
Wed, September 3, 2008 - 8:16 AMI finally got tired of waiting around for a witch and used a cheat to snag one. I have a cheat on my mailbox where I can have a Sim know everyone, down to the most menial NPC....even living statues, too. It's really a burden for a Sim to know everyone, so I used a Sim that I'm planning on giving a very short life to...and I must say, the ringer off option with the phone is a new blessing. Usually when I use this cheat(which is not very often) the Sim is plagued with phone calls.
Anyway, this Sim is living in a townhouse right next door to the Sim that I really want to learn magic, so she gets all nice nice with a good witch, invites her over and introduces her to her next door neighbor. Once they've been introduced I switch over to the other Sim and she invites the witch over and befriends her.
Funny thing is that while my main Sim and the witch hang out together, all the witch seems to want to talk about is how hot the first Sim's husband is. I may have to spark a little romance up there some time.
Anyway, once my Sim was 100/26 friendship with the witch, the option came up to ask for lessons in witchcraft. She was given a spellbook on a podium and a cauldron (and official good witch dress and hat). With the spellbook, she can learn spells... good, neutral and evil, discover which reagents are needed for each spell, and check on her learning progress. To cast a spell, reagents are needed....that's where the cauldron comes in. Sims can make a variety of reagents in the cauldron.
I didn't have a whole lot of time to play, and my Sim still hasn't cast her first spell; however, I did learn that with just a little bit of study, your Sim can not only make reagents for spells in the cauldron, but all the potions from other EP's as well. Now I'm wondering if my Sim gets very skilled in magic, if they can also make cauldrons and spellbooks and teach other Sims magic.
This is going to be so freaking cool! I am really loving this EP!
Oh, some of the spells so far allow the sims to quickly clean up water spills, elevate a Sim's mood, summon butterflies, make a Sim either fit or fat, and quickly clean up leaf litter...I haven't even begun to look into the evil spells yet...oh, why can't the weekend come a little sooner? -

Re: Apartment Life
Wed, September 3, 2008 - 7:52 PMI have that cheat too, but didn't even think about using it. Now I just may have to.

LOL
I found out something neat that's been there all along: My sim couple's male half was a Romance aspiration, so he was going out on all sorts of hot dates while his college sweetheart was home unawares. But when I had her "View" his dream date bouquet of roses from one of the "other women", it was the same as catching him cheating!
It's kind of sick that I get this much pleasure out of it, considering it happening in real life is not nearly as intriguing :) -

Re: Apartment Life
Fri, September 12, 2008 - 5:16 AMIs anyone else having problems with this EP? For some reason I keep getting error messages. They're annoying, but at least they aren't causing my game to crash. Yet. I'm so waiting for a patch. Other than that, the one thing that really bothered me is that nowhere in the booklet or the tips does it tell you what you're supposed to do to build apartments and actually have them show up as apartments and not one big giant house. I had to go to the forums to figure that one out. At least now I know what to do. Other than that, I'm still loving this one.
Unrelated to apartment life, I finally saw my first wolf yesterday. I've got a sim trying to befriend him so I can get a visit from the leader of the pack. I really want to have a werewolf sim. -

Re: Apartment Life
Fri, September 12, 2008 - 6:48 AMI haven't actually built an apartment yet, I've just been using the pre-built ones in the custom lot menu...I was assuming I'd have to build it then use the Changelot_zoning cheat.
Is there a different way? -
-
Re: Apartment Life
Fri, September 12, 2008 - 8:42 PMThe only thing I know of is the changelotzoning cheat. But that's what I had to go looking for. Now that I've got it, though, I've been having fun building stuff. I built some pretty awesome townhouses modeled on one that someone I know used to live in. They're really super expensive though. LOL The rent is somewhere over $10,000 a week! Thank the OFBL for the motherlode cheat. -
-
Re: Apartment Life
Sat, September 13, 2008 - 6:41 AMI was wondering about how the rent was calculated...and yeah, I'm grateful for motherlode as well. I wanted to build some with gardens for my nature loving sims, and I'm betting they're gonna be pricey.

No way! That's awesome!
I found out about something that's been there all along too. One of my coworkers, who was a gameplay engineer on The Sims 2, told me that he was the one who put the ability to do yoga on a coffee table in the game. I was like, "What??? You can do yoga on a coffee table???" I had had no idea! Turns out, if your Sim has an Active score of 9 or 10, coffee tables become interactive just for the purpose of yoga! So it would be kind of hard to come across on your own unless you happen to have a highly active Sim, since personalities don't usually change. But it's really cool! Even more so since I know the guy who did the design for it. :) -

That's so cool! I never cared much for the personality stuff, I used to always try to just balance it out, but I've noticed differences like that when you get into the extremes. I think I have a Sim I can do that with, I'm going to go try now! -

Re: Apartment Life
Sun, September 14, 2008 - 9:29 AMJust thought I'd post this for easy access. To change a lot into an apartment or townhouse, type:
changeLotZoning apartmentbase -

Re: Apartment Life
Sun, September 14, 2008 - 9:54 AMJust to expand on Thistle's post, cause I found this out the hard way. That cheat will only work if you make sure that your apartments have ONLY one way in or out. Otherwise it gives you an error message and you have to fix it. But it requires you to change back and forth between aparmentbase and residential. What a pain. -
-
Re: Apartment Life
Mon, September 15, 2008 - 10:04 AMThanks for expanding on that Amy. I hadn't yet discovered what a pain it is to change invalid lots. And sometimes the only way to discover that your lot doesn't work correctly is to move a Sim in. So in order to fix things, you have to move the Sim(s) out, go into the vacant lot, change zoning to residential, save and exit, then re-enter, fix what needs fixing, then change the zoning again. I spent almost a full day tweaking one lot..(garages are an even bigger pain), and one of the cottages still doesn't work right...of course, I only found that out after moving in and settling 2 families of sims. I finally decided f**k it, and let an npc use the last unit....who cares if they can only access the garage?
I don't see why they don't allow you full access to build mode when working on an empty apartment lot. I can see not allowing it when Sims are occupying it, but not on a vacant lot. -

Re: Apartment Life
Wed, September 24, 2008 - 8:08 AMI've also noticed that now that there are witches abroad, the vampires are coming out more often, and they are very hungry!
I had 2 Sims get bitten within moments of an appearance by a vampire on a community lot...one of the Sims I wasn't even playing at the time! Good thing his wife is a witch, she can just whip up a batch of vampirocillin and cure him, but I've never seen such an aggressive move by a vampire before.
In the past, I thought that vampires would only bite Sims they had a strong regard for...not anymore. This vampire had never met my 2 Sims before chomping on their necks. -

This happened to me too, but I don't even have Apartment Life yet. I used my sims' influence to make a Townie vampire bite the neck of another townie woman. I then romanced the vampiress townie and had her movie in. Then she in turn had the vampire move in. Even when he moved in, his free will would have him randomly biting guests all over the place. He even once ran out of the house after a passer-by! -

Re: Apartment Life
Mon, October 6, 2008 - 10:30 AMPerhaps they tweaked the vampires a bit in the last update.
I've just had another vampire attack...seems they're starting to run amok. 2 more of my Sims that I wasn't currently playing were bitten on a community lot at night. Strangely enough, there was no vampire attack when one of my Sims made a nighttime journey to the local cemetery, only when they traveled to a lot to buy clothes and pets. I wonder if it was the graves that kept the vampires away, or just random occurrences? -

They should have at least have the decency to stick to their stereotypes. Maybe a night club, but a late night pet store attack? C'mon! LOL
